No mater how many times you kill it, just like a bad habit, it comes back.
Is this a bug with my installation, with the game, or is this just what I get for not wanting to talk to Aeris? Because she's just running face-first into it and can't complete her animation.

Yeah I had this too but it didn't break my game because I'm not a monster and talked to Aeris

There's no escaping the scorp.
The latest main installer that's up should correct this issue; there was going to be hotfix patches accompanying it but more problems popped up in the meantime. I'm going to have the next set of hotfix patches up tonight.

Awesome. I went ahead and got past it by just sucking it up and listening to Aeris ramble, so no worries there.
On an unrelated note, and while I have you here, I have a quick question. Does Cloud not have an innate in the current build?

LMAO I saw that Scorpion in the same place. Was wondering if you did that on purpose...

Afraid not. It causes a soft-lock if the wrong dialog option is picked while talking to Aeris, but for some reason the quick script changes I made weren't making it stay invisible...until I figured out why. About to update the patches to finally rid myself of this menace.
