Insane Difficulty: Final Fantasy IV: The Darkness Within Version 1.07a Now Available! - Insane Difficulty

Just started playing the hack today and I'm really enjoying it, though I'm only at Mt. Hobs so far. It seems like you've found a good way to make use of a lot of features (and equipment) of the game that didn't really work in the original like the Ancient sword, which I recall came at a really weird time without being much of an upgrade. I do like more emphasis on status effects as well, it makes the randoms more interesting, although it requires holding a lot more items and the item menu in the game is a bit of a pain and its too bad there isn't larger "backpack," but those are problems with the original.

Anyway, I've run into a few glitches: I also had some weird issues with the Cave of the Eidolons. I was fighting a big formation of warriors and fiends (?), and I think it was after one of them cast charm on me and suddenly Palom had two call commands and about 50 holy claws, but no fight command to use them with Things got back to normal afterwards.

Also some issues in the sealed cave: I had Edward die to a trap door and then he hid after he was revived which soft locked the game.

I can't confirm exactly what happened or whether it went down like this, but it seemed like when I fought Milon (the first fight), he died on his own rather than from damage. He did hit himself with condemned after it reflected back on him, so I'm not sure if that did it or if I just missed the final blow...On a second try to see if I could replicate it I also just had the game freeze when fighting the first Milon, but I don't remember what happened before hand to do it.

Lastly, I tried using Pray on Mt Hobs and it always seems to cast a mass death spell on my party (once it did Stone but that didn't do anything). What god is Rosa praying to and why does it hate her?

Edit: As I'm sure if often the case, the problem may be a dirty rom since when I checked it was not the same one you have listed in the readme. I'll try again with the new one and see if that fixes any of the problems, and let you know if that works.

I'm curious now since numerous people are having these issues. What is the exact name of the vanilla ROM file you used which caused these issues?

The original one I was playing off of was just "Final Fantasy II (USA)"

Most FFIV ROMs are version 1.0 unless indicated otherwise. This mod requires an unheadered version 1.1 ROM to function properly. I would wager that this is what is causing the strange command issues for most people.

No, I haven't been working on anything major lately. Just started a new job, so I haven't had much time to devote to the mod. Any changes will be minor bugfixes as they come up.

Ya know, now that I think about it, I've never really tested my base ROM file myself to see if it's 1.0 or 1.1. The editing tool I use says it only works with 1.1 versions, so after finding what is labeled as 1.1 I always assumed that it, in fact, was. I'll have to try doing the Trash Can glitch some time to test. Would be kinda funny and tremendously sucky if I've been telling people to download the wrong version all this time.

With that said though, the ROM file mentioned in the OP and in the readme will absolutely 100% work.

I patched the 1.1 rom and have gotten back to Mt Hobs where I was before and haven't experienced any problems with random holy claws or with special commands, so I imagine that was the issue. All of Edward's commands worked fine and Rosa's pray is no longer insta-death (as hilarious as that was).

Thanks for the quick info, I'm sure modders can get tired of responding to so many glitch reports with "Try patching with a clean rom." It reminds me of the show "The IT Crowd" where the IT department never answers their phone, but has it hooked up with an automatic message telling people to try restarting their computers.

A trick I use for BNW to negate the version requirement is to use a version 1.1 ROM as the base when I create the release patch (we did all our work on a version 1.0 ROM). This essentially forces the patch to convert the player's ROM to 1.0.

I don't know what the differences are between 1.0 and 1.1 in FF2/4, so this could drastically increase the size of the patch, but it does seem to work for us.

1.1 fixed some monster scripting as well as the Twin mimic glitch (used in speedruns to use the Trash Can as a battle item if you're curious).

I guess, if anything, making sure the new spells are learned at the correct levels and there's no wonkiness with the new weapons. Seeing how Cecil stacks up now with his weapon power boost will help too.

I apologize for the delay. I had a lot of problems come up lately, but I finally marathoned the game the last two days. The changes to Cecil made him finally feel useful, thanks for taking the time to make the changes. The new equipment kept him feeling useful the whole time. With his new spells he was really helpful in end game, since Rosa is the only one that has Fury, Slow, and Blink.

The only thing I noticed was still the same old error with the guard in Troia castle repeating what the matron says, but that's not really a big deal.
