-Duelist is SoM1-boy 2.0: physical powerhouse but finally some spells; saber boost most of Charlie's spells (and his&Lise's phys. attack), anti-magic nerfs phys. immune enemies and aura wave wants to present you with faster eruption swords
-Vanadise only does everything: heal, buffs, phys. damage and some spell damage - same as the girl could do; though MT heal requires a whitelight ring
-Necro brings your nuking and stat downs
The MT damage is a bit limited with the non-elemental summon, 2 MT techs, black rain and holy ball but otherwise... could do worse. At least the team fits size- and otherwise to the SoM1 mold^^
As for a Duran, Angela, Charlie setup...
try Lord, Archmage, Sage

1) Paladin:
Paladin gives you Heal Light, and you'll have Protect Up and Magic Shield for stat-ups. You won't have Tinkle Rain, and your elemental coverage is limited Hawk's jutsus and Duran's Saint Saber. The latter is the bigger weakness, IMHO, so make Kevin a Death Hand. So Dark Hawk, Paladin and Death Hand. I'd still feel uneasy without Tinkle Rain, though.
2) Duelist:
You have elemental coverage, Anti-Magic and Aura Wave. Now you'll need healing and buffs, so Kevin has to become Light. Therefore, either God Hand for Tinkle Rain, Power Up, Magic Shield and Life Booster, or Warrior Monk for Power Up, Mind Up and Body Change. So Dark Hawk, Duelist and Light Kevin.
Alternatively, you could go Wanderer, Lord and Dervish, but that party sounds like much of the team's offensive capabilities have been reduced.

If you want to include Rogue, it's not ideal, but Rogue, Warrior Monk, Paladin should work.

I know it has been a while but I have just finished a hard run with Rogue Hawk and Sage Carlie and Dragon Master Liese. It was kinda weird with the debuff over lap but it was also the first time I used elemental sabers in a party and it felt pretty good. Sage carlie was actually an ok off-caster with the saint beam, dark force and rainbow dust spells along with her support stuff. I usually had the white light ring on Carlie most of the time with a AGI weapon and I had went down the crit build road with hawk so he and liese both did really nice damage with the saber buffs. While it wasn't the most optimal run it was quite fun.

For the paladin I was going to try to play him as a tank by raising vitality for a high physical defense and using those tech bar multiplying weapons to keep knocking the enemy down, likely at the cost of strength.
I thought Kevin could be a dervish and use luck to get a lot of crits out, but not too sure. Rune Master can pick up elemental sabers and with two melee character I thought the best fit would thus be: Rune Master, Dervish, Paladin. Any thoughts on this combo?

You'll have MT def up, st def down/speed down, antimagic, elemental nukes, poison, healing ofc, all kinds of sabers...
Only thing you'll maybe want to buy is drake scales for power up. You can even use whitelight ring on Kevin to make his buffs/debuffs MT, if you want.
It's a very solid team IMO.

I didn't see anyone using both Duran and Kevin on a team, so I was worried. I think its because the AI is terrible. We're doing 3 player so that's not a concern. Think the sabers from rune master would be worth it for this party?

Even more solid with the new armor in the new patch that allows debuffs to buff making Dervish gain Speed Up and Protect Up when needed *cough cough* Lugar.

I'd suggest Duelist, Archmage, Vanadise:
- you'll learn to love auto-heal from heal light after the torture of Bucca Island (Knight->Lord deprives you of this option)
- You'll learn to use the whitelight ring to get a MT healer (again, Lord deprives you of this necessity)
- You'll have the option to play around with sabers; they have both offense and defense uses. (again, you need the Duelist out of both teams)
Also Archmage instead of Grand Divina to have Power&Mind Down, that helps a lot (-25% damage taken), heals by Vanadise.
Or let's go very crazy:
Duelist (saber, anti-magic, aura wave), Grand Divina (heals, transshape, sleep), Fenrir Knight (debuffs OR buffs with a certain armor); might or not profit from a certain new armor that switches buff<->debuff effects. Ok, that one lacks a bit in the "def&m.def + power&mind down at the same time" department...
Depends on what the desired experience is.

Also praetarius when pointing those stuff about the duelist, were you actually recommending the lord? I got a little confused there

nope, I meant as I wrote it;
with the Lord party you won't get the "pleasure" of waiting a long time before you finally get free heals
also he himself knows MT heal by default so again you won't experience what the whitelight ring can do for you.
What I wanted to advocate was a team that will give you more personal experience.
Bucca isn't that bad, I just personally hate the entire sequence starting from Bill/Ben1 to end of Bucca since you're "trapped" in a sense; you can't go back to old towns to buy items you missed or couldn't afford. Blackmarket for a buff or two is right out as well, etc. And if you keep up with the enemy levels this trap is almost 10 levels long.

Alternatively, take Swordmaster instead of Duelist, as Archmage already covers Anti-Magic and Aura Wave. Swordmaster has more Sabers, including Saint and Moon, and he can use Energy Ball on himself to get more critical hits.
