Counter Hyper Drive mechanic for some super bosses what triggers it?

By the grace of rosalina and the hacked PC mods of Juri I was able to beat the barrel volcano super boss TWICE once in my mid 80's and again after beating smithy in my 100's however I still don't understand how the counter hyper drive mechanic works and its the reason I can't beat the kero sewers super boss(not antiGuy).
Im on the hard version 8 btw and this is my first armaggeon hack playthrough it took me a few months to get this far lol.
