Hello Insane Difficulty!
With all of the new changes suggested for Insane Difficulty, the first necessary step to update the functionality and features of the website is to upgrade from IPS version 3.1.4 to IPS version 4.1. This will include many new features, and will hopefully improve some of the more unstable things on the current version.
Along with the update, I will likely be creating multiple themes, as well as keep the old theme (Updating the structure to 4.1) for you guys to choose from. Other side effects will hopefully include an amazing captcha (no more spam!) among many other security improvements.
Ninjasdf had an amazing idea to add a LP page on the site, since the media page isn't really used. This will include LP's from members of the site, organized by game / mod.
Any suggestions (especially right now, before the coding begins - I'm only designing right now) would be greatly appreciated - suggest things you want to see added to the updated site. This process could take quite a while, so if you think of something, please don't hesitate to mention it!
I will be updating this thread for all updates pertaining to the redesign.

Are there default theme choices or can there be custom themes? Not sure if we wanted to put it out there for anyone of the more artsy among us to offer some designs. Or if there is a limited pool of pre-done choices maybe a vote for what themes are available?
LP page sounds great, the media page had promise but it's understandable that it didn't take off. There is a lot of work in the upkeep of something like that.
As far as suggestions...I guess this is more of a question for discussion but how do we want to organize the way the mods are displayed? Do we want to separate difficulty mods from non-difficulty mods? Or the way we display them now? Or some different way?
Some progress photos from time to time would be cool to see as well. I'm really looking forward to the improved site!

I'm overheating of the excitement! I don't have anybspecific ideas atm, but I'll be sure to post any. Everyone post any ideas, even if they're not your greatest, for the sake of brainstorming!

We have enough mod's that it's not hard to just enforce first post authorization that a captcha feels like a bad idea. Especially after the last one....
Other ideas? How about a 'project showcase' on the forum frontpage, and/or main index. Box that shows a random project we're hosting. (not necessarily just the ones we have forums for, but things like the DW3 hardtype, or the FFTA2 mod, the SOTN hardtype, etc that we have in development discussion.) List a little blurb about it, and link to it's thread/forum and/or download.
This would be a great way to showcase new mods that users might not otherwise ever look at, and displaying some carefully chosen screenshots with the blurb would be a great way to draw attention to these up and coming developers and mods.

I'm against making two separate categories for "difficult" and "not so difficult" mods.
For one difficulty is (partially) subjective and it might create a bias that drives most new people to the non-difficult ones.
At least I would feel that the "difficult" section would become synonym to "bad design" (think Kaizo Mario for why), which it isn't necessarily.
I'd rather see a new category under Community for "new mods" so that it is easier to find mods that exist but don't have their own topic yet. Or even allow - with approval of higher ups - to create mod topics/categories on our own, so the smaller mods don't get lost somewhere in general discussion.

I like this a lot.

I second this idea. Some sort of grading system in general sounds decent on paper (like a 0-5 star system for difficulty and level design, just as an example), but implementation is a harder question there. Just having "New mods" or maybe something like "Newly updated" would be a classification that doesn't seem neither hard to implement nor includes any arbitrary classifications, besides how long a "New" mod/update actually is "New".
