Started up a new game, got through the opening shit no problem. Wandered into the Evil Forest and encountered a fang. Quickly discovered he kills me in 2 hits, I kill him in 2. He got first turn and killed me. Off to a good start...
Killed the plant cages in one go each. Then did some grinding for some gil. Not being able to buy phoenix downs between the crash site and Dali has probably caused a few resets.
Anyway, I was like lv4 at this point. May have over leveled a bit, because me vs Plant Brain ended in a smashing victory. Not a problem.
Black Waltz 1 took a couple attempts. My plan was kill him, then start stealing. Anyway, after using like 20 potions I finally get him. With a shiny new dagger, of course.
Black Waltz 2, I was doing a scouting run. My plan was to see if it he was the one who countered magic, and also what he had. After a counter fire put me in really bad shape, I was just half ass fighting him, after a few minutes I realized that I had both recovered and stolen all his shit. So I proceeded to stab him until he died. Definately the easiest boss so far. Think I over leveled, I was at like 7.
For BW3, between dual cast and counter magic on Vivi, I killed him before I stole everything with the last action of vivi's trance. Missed a Linen Cuirass, no big deal.
I died once to those pink salamander guys in the marsh, got killed by an ironite, and got fucking annihilated by a ironite back attack. This... This does not bode well. Anyway, finished Chocobo Hot & Cold, now time to hunt down some blue magic.
Edit: I dunno what I was thinking with the topic title...
Me vs. Bosses: How hard are they?

Iirc, the ideal level for the Plant Brain is lvl 3, for Black Waltz 2 is something around 5-6.
How doyou feel about damage output (yours and the enemies, including bosses) in this version? Tbh, I liked the first 2 discs more with the last version.

I like this one better so far. Vivi doing the most damage in the party is awesome. Enemies seem to be doing about the right amount of damage.
What did you like better about the last version?

Anyone know if steals rates got altered? It took 75ish steals to steal the god damn ice staff from gizamaluke.

The really hard steals are easier to steal whle the rest stay unchanged iirc.
I just do a hard reset when I didn't clean a boss off its loot after 10 steals. I know it sounds stupid but it works, the RNG in FF9 is really weird.

Holy shit that was not worth the effort, I didn't realize there was an oak staff in one of the chocographs.

Disc 1 completed.
So, after the nightmare that was stealing the ice staff, I proceeded to get the 3 available chocographs. I then wandered into burmecia and killed a bunch of random enemies. I was finally strong enough to kill an ironite. Pyro + Eat got me Angel snack. Woo.
Beatrix...This battle is timed. So, it is likely going to be either too easy or too hard. It is currently the former. Managed to steal some cool shit (all I remember is a mythril sword).
As for disc 1. I liked it. In vanilla and v1.0.1 the part between Lindblum has some shitty character balance. Zidane did a lot of damage, freya did a bit less, Vivi does almost no damage with an mp cost and shit hp, and Quina is pretty bad until you get him some magic.
In this, Zidane and Freya do comparable damage with melee, Vivi and freya do comparable damage with Jump/Magic, and Quina does a ton of damage with Pyro/Aqua Breath, but has limited HP. Nobody feels like a waste of space. Vivi is still probably the least useful, but that's because lv1 spells are nearing the end of their lifetime and he has such shit hp. But he is still usable with the reduced mp costs (14 mp for fire was fucking crazy).
Once he gets blizzara/bio, he ends enemies. Pretty sweet.
So yeah, this version is pretty sweet.
Does anybody know what I need to do in treno to prepare for the Mistodons? How high a level should Steiner be? I think I'm going to shoot for 17, should that be enough?

Cleyra was incredibly uneventful. Antlion killed me by opening with a sandstorm then attacking somebody, game overing me via trouble. Second attempt went my way.
My fears of the bandersnatches was mildly unfounded. They killed me once, second attempt I killed them all. Thought there was three battles in a row, maybe it got changed.
Ralvuimagho wasn't too bad. Killed me once because he absorbs thunder, and he kept attacking Vivi it it. Counter magic FTL.
Pinnacle rocks was uneventful.
14 years later, and the scene where Lindblum gets wiped out still gives me chills.
Lani killed me once. Stole me a gladius.
Got killed by a zaghnol after he thundara'd twice in a row. First one killed everybody but dagger, then before she acted (command put in before the first one) he did it again. 16 hp ain't gonna weather no thundara.
