The main reason I argued for something like this is to avoid the pain in the ass of redoing the allocations for people you were already satisfied with. If that helps at all.

The only thing I would ever consider resetting a character build for is a Crusader Celes... just because those are some sweet bonuses that happen super late game.

i considered resetting mog because i'm building him for vigor, and both of the pertinent espers are in the world of ruin. i ultimately decided against it. other late bloomers in terms of espers include: phoenix locke, stamina setzer, relm and strago. in terms of gear: magic edgar and stamina celes have very little to offer until the wor.

my atma weapon party this last run was vigor mog (i.e. no esper levels), magic edgar (with a healthy does of unicorn), stamina celes (with a smidge of seraph), and shadow had 5 els of phantom. definitely not optimal but it only took two tries (not counting the time i forgot to change my gear.) and i think i killed him before he reapplied his buffs.

tl;dr esper levels aren't necessary but the respec allows for more experimentation.

Yeah, I'm doing a playthrough where I just spend EL on what I feel like at the time and it's taught me that I didn't really need as much of a "build" as I thought. Vigor Terra is probably better with more levels in vigor than I gave her, but it sure is nice that she doesn't die to a brief breeze. It's interesting that for me, the possibility of respeccing is going to be really liberating I think, but I'll probably only use it rarely if at all.

Yes, this was intentionally done so you could actually have complete control over who gets reset.

If I had a better understanding of ELs on this playthrough - entirely my own fault through lack of comprehension - I'd have dumped my ELs on bonuses that were relevant in the WoB, and reset them when desired for some sort of "endgame" build, possibly just for a class change of sorts just before the Dragons and such. At that point, the respec is a trivial cost, though a respec just entering the WoR would be an investment and a half to respecialize stats that aren't exactly going to waste however you put them. I do find the option very mentally relieving, though.

In my experience, Terra is probably the single hardest person to "ruin" with haphazard Esper bonuses. Vigor is obviously useful, but Magic is tied to all the Lv3 spells, HP increases her survivability in an environment where people can rapidly die, MP lets her spend more time throwing spells, and Stamina cuts into her Morph penalty while offering a stronger Fight command with the Atma/Omega Weapon.

All that said, everyone has a baseline performance that never dips into Bad. I was saving ELs on a few people waiting for specific Magicite, and they never fell behind.

Ahahahaha....I wish.

I did the unthinkable that playthrough and dumped Terra for Umaro. I'm pretty sure that's partially the cause for the World of Ruin, so I apologize everyone.

(Bismark + Unicorn is the bulky fighter Terra. Tritoch gives excess stamina that can't be properly leveraged.)

Honestly, having someone you truly can't over-hybridize is nice if you consider that he's forced for the FC. You can acquire him pretty dang early in the WoR, to boot.

But yeah, would've rolled more Vigor/Magic levels in the WoB for sure, particularly for characters I won't be seeing for a while and should have the money to immediately refit.
