How Does Leveling Work Pre-Espers?

Hi!
First of all, I'm loving the mod. Feels great, and judging from the readme it seems like you massively improved one of my favorite games.
One thing I'm not clear on is how leveling works before Espers come into the game. Specifically, I noticed that on the status screen my XP needed for next level never decreases. In the readme it mentions how the leveling system works, but what I'm curious about is how characters gain levels before Espers, and how abilities like Bushido and Blitz improve. Also, does the leveling system essentially mean that I can't improve my characters' toughness before Zozo (or wherever it is you get the first Espers, can't remember anymore .
Thanks!

The leveling system pre-Zozo works just like any other normal leveling system does. I'm not sure what you mean when you say that the "XP needed for next level" never decreases... except that possibly you turned off experience gain in the config menu by mistake.
To say that you cannot raise your characters' toughness outside of EL is actually incorrect, since levels raise HP/MP and level remains the single greatest factor in most of the game's damage formulas. It is also how the Blitz and Bushido skills are furthered, as well as the natural magic learned by Terra and Celes.

At max level can you continue to grind for ELs? If you're overleveled before Zozo, does it make it harder to gain EL points since you can no longer gain levels as quickly?

I see, so EP is just completely separate from levels completely now, and the benefits of levels are now only in regards to the damage formulas and learned abilities/magic?

That's okay, it happens to every guy.
Well I was tired, and I'd been drinking, you see... It's never happened before or anything.... Look let's not make a big deal out of it ok?
By the way, two characters (Locke and Gau) started with 30+ EP. Not too much of an issue as I can just make sure to level them when I level other members of the party. Just sayin'.

It isn't SP, it's the points you use for adding the Esper-based stat gains. Which would break the game if I used them, obviously. I think it's fine, cause like I said I'm leveling all party members at the same time so I know roughly how many points I can use without adding too few/many.
Speaking of which, the readme mentions that you can respec those points later in the game. Is that a one-time respec, or are there multiple respecs? I don't need to know when/where or anything, just curious.

That's... weird. Almost sounds like you updated from an existing save.
And the re-spec is 25,000 GP for the first and 100k for all subsequent ones.
