I mean, it's already unwinnable. Maybe you can make it more epic somehow?

I second this.
If you would make it even more unwinnable that would help a lot. It needs as much unwinnability as possible, especially if people can't win it in its current state.

I honestly haven't given it much thought. I've got a lot on my plate right now irl so progress may be a little slow for now.

When i saw him join my part back when i played the game for the first time i was like HELL YEAH
And then i saw he only had 100ish hp, i had this sinking feeling of betrayal :*( Stopped playing BoF3 right after that boss battle and didn't come back until after a few years.

And yeah plot powers like that happen in most JRPGs, like Beatrix from FF9 or Leon from ToD.

The game is rather inconsistent though. It's kinda boring when you fight a very, very hard character that later joins and for no apparent reason becomes a weakling. It would be one thing if there was an explanation to the loss of power, but it's a sheer disappointment when there isn't.
I completely understand the feeling of betrayal maxi felt. Bad design is bad.

Perhaps give him the normal stats, but flag him with every possible positive status there is.
Reprisal, Dodge, Lucky Strike, Regen, Poison.
And before someone asks, Poison stacked with Regen as far as the enemy is concerned is a buff. Poison makes you take 75% damage in return for that damage tick each turn. If you watch my Dragon Trial LP you'll see that I use it against Nue 1 to take less damage. When you stack that with Regen, it effectively eliminates the damage tick and actually still nails them a net gain of HP each turn.

Unintentional as it may be, it's a pretty nice little tradeoff. Consider for a moment that you're fighting a boss with a fucking ton of HP. That damage tick per turn on top of the (reduced) damage you're now doing to them may actually end up to be more than before. On the other hand, I can see it being a viable strategy to poison a boss while you heal up and prepare (buffs and the like), then cure it before you start wailing on them.

Is there a more neutral name that would fit better, so one doesn't get fooled by the name of the skill? Something that more says "there's a tradeoff" than "YOU'RE GONNA DIE!".

It's not the name so much as the status itself.
Best I can do is educate people.

AP drains and Resist are both strong.

Give Garr a set amount of HP limit to reach, to have him end the battle. By "winning" I think it should give a boost to Ryu's over all stats (be creative, + in STR, DEF, etc.)
However, make the battle optional to win, so if you lose, you just don't get the stat boost, and the game continues normally. kind of makes the battle feel a bit more epic and useful and that Ryu "put up a fight" for at least something lol.

That wouldn't work. I could make it so that once Garr crosses a certain HP threshold, he becomes death incarnate, but the drops would have to be stat items, at which point you could give them to whoever you wished.
