Surprisingly, I found the 2nd mutant boss to be the hardest encounter in the game. Lavos, in comparison, was relatively "fair."

Lavos's final two forms took me maybe two tries...one of them realizing I kinda needed Auto-Shell & Auto-Protect to survive his attacks easily, heh.

So is there something I should know for Giga Mutant? I gave it a solid 2 hours last night, may put another hour or so into it now before I just give up on the ROM. I can't make any progress on him. Everyone is level 70, maxed MDEF and has an item that claims to cut magic damage by 1/3, and both his luminaire and water thing are a one hit ko for my entire team. I've tried every group setup; I've tried barriers and shields, I've tried alternating blue and white mails on my team, but the mutant takes turn after turn after turn, I can't keep anyone alive for more than 15 seconds.

It actually reminds me of Ozma in the Final Fantasy IX Unleashed mod, which I thought was just terrible; but this guy you have to beat to finish the game D:

Oyeah, to go into a bit further detail. My most successful failure so far has been Crono w/Blue & Marle/Frog w/White. I put the counter attack items on Crono and Frog, Prism Helms on all 3. I let those 2 counter attack all the ae's and just tried to keep myself alive through the mutant's relentlessly fast attacks. Crono can survive the luminaire with 90 or so hp left, and Frog/Marle survive the water thing with about 100hp left. Even just focusing all 3 of my characters on keeping myself alive, I can't stay alive.

Update: I finally beat the bastard, after about 5 hours total, with the above setup. I also had to exploit save states throughout the fight, as my touch screen phone was often screwing up my time intensive button presses (literally, there were 10+ times where a half second delay in pressing down -> tech caused my entire team to die).

For anyone in the future coming here wondering wtf to do on this guy, my above setup worked. I spent about 80% of the fight using Lapis, Full Tonic, Heal (Frog) and Double Cure (Frog/Marle). Haste all 3 characters when you have a second to do so, Marle first. I was able to use Ice Sword 2 about 4 times, for 2200 damage to both the top and bottom, in situations where I thought Frog's Heal spell would keep me alive long enough for he and Marle to get another turn... though it's possible I only knew Frog would do the job because I already knew what the mutant was going to cast, because of save states :-/ If you're not using save states... godspeed

For Giga Mutant, having Amulet or simply using Heal to remove Poison status helps big time, and obviates the need to really think too hard about the attack pattern. Having Poison status causes him to deal insane damage with Luminaire and Hexagon Mist, but characters with normal status take more reasonable damage.

My strat for giga mutant:

Use Crono + Marle + Robo. This gets you access to lifeline, which helps a lot. The offensive capabilities of the team aren't the best, but you will be relatively safe.

Gear setup: Crono is naturally resistant to lightning and Marle is naturally resistant to water. Give Crono and Robo Blue mail to absorb water and rubber helms to resist lightning (this will make luminaire do less damage than a prism helm would, and luminaire and hexagon mist are the really scary magic attacks.) Give Marle white mail to absorb luminaire and a mermaid cap to further resist water.

Robo gets an amulet, Chrono gets prismatic specs and Marle gets sun shades (whatever the 25% damage boost is).

Start the battle by getting haste and lifeline up. Haste will probably run out at some point, so make sure to recast it when it does.

Attack with Ice Sword 2 when able. Keep Robo basically on permanent healing duty.

Heal very proactively. Feel free to use elixirs.

Heal poison IMMEDIATELY. Almost all your wipes will be due to getting poisoned and then KOed by a spell. Fortunately if lifeline kicks in the poison will be gone; recast lifeline if say 2 of your party members are killed.

If there were 2 more amulets in the game this would be a much easier fight. Unfortunately there isn't a really good gear setup that will let you survive both luminaire and hexagon mist while also having status immunity. I suppose you could use barriers or try fitting Magus into the party, but lifeline is a real help.

Yeah, it's complete. Theoretically, I may come back to it some day and redo some things, but it's 100% finished.

'Cause Luminaire felt quite a bit overpowered, or it's my habit of sticking every magic tab down Crono's throat... that could be as well.

Luminaire is the strongest spell, though other chars will tend to do more damage with magic if you don't boost his low Magic stat at all. Overall, I think Luminaire winds up being 50% stronger than Dark Matter? Round abouts. But some Dual and Triple Techs can easily outshine Luminaire (even if you divide the damage by 3), they just aren't as easy to pull off as single techs.

I played this mod a couple months ago, up to the Black Omen. I haven't played it since but I was thinking about jumping back in. I ran into a problem where I can't get Crono because of a glitch with the Epoch (in case you don't know about it, I found out it was in the original game but I just happened to run into it for the first time here). Anyways, does anyone know a Pro-Action or Game Genie code to fix this problem (if there even is one)?

What are the detail of the glitch exactly? I'm curious now. I generally try to search things like this myself, but I simply don't know what words to type here.

I've not heard of such a glitch. Some details would be nice.

My problem is labeled '2 Epochs Glitch'. This is funny because you guys may have indirectly given me a solution to the problem because I only searched this out when you asked, and at the end of the write-up on the section '2 Epochs Glitch' it says, "It is possible to avoid the crash, and delete the duplicate Epoch, if you move the original Epoch before talking to Gaspar. The next time you visit the Keeper's Dome, the Nu will be in the corridor." I can't remember if I have talked to Gaspar or not in my latest save, but I'm going to check soon.

Edit: Nope, Crono is dead until New Game+.
