I'm surprised that Soul Steal didn't got the nerf bat. -

Avoiding encounters would make you a dirty cheater.
Believe it or not, clearing the game without random encounters is more challenging than clearing the game with exp off, because you cannot even farm gold.
They even had a contest for Bravely Default with no random encounters. -

Yeah, not really punishment... You Noiseblast or otherwise muddle the the mobs, then steal. They destroy themselves. Nice new mechanic for killing enemies. And since the retaliation is often magic, it doesn't knock them back to their senses if it doesn't kill everyone outright.
My first reaction when I saw the animals attacking ruthlessly when I steal is "so you were fine with me trying to kill you but you go serious mode when I'm trying to steal?". -

OH my gosh yes a FFXII IZJS hardtype would be very interesting in fact I think that any FF that allows you to choose or/and change Jobs would be very interesting to re-balance and high up the difficulty.
Also I would like to see a Valkyrie Profile : Lenneth difficulty/re-balance hack that would be cool.
A Valkyrie Profile rebalance hack that doesn't make mashing rewarding, and actually forces you to think before you act each turn! -

Eh, my experience is that fighting every fight will get you a tier above for the entire game, except for the Floating Continent (where you'll be more on par). But w/e. Thanks for the compliments.
I agree. I can't imagine the level I'd be if I had exp toggled on right now (at Veldt and level 8) due to the RNG frequency of combat the SNES version has.

A pretty big influence on that front is a little game called the 7th Saga, an evil little shit of a game designed by Enix back in the early 90's that is often derided by players as a grindy game that requires grinding with a side of more grinding. While that is true to an extent, you can actually beat the game at about half of the "expected" end-game level if you actually know what you're doing.
It's one of the things I loved about Bravely and Brave New World - the idea that they give the player the option to customize his game experience with exp/jp capping. While the vast majority of players are even wondering why would they do such a thing, I'm jumping up and down like a happy kangaroo.
Or the other thing they did with Bravely Default, where they held a contest to complete the game without random encounters, which means not just a low level challenge but relatively low in money too.
Trying various approaches in a game I like a lot gives it tons of replay value.
