The first fight is one of the hardest. You need lots of CC abilities and using someone as bait to meat shield will help.

The first battle IS one of the hardest, as the monsters base stats will be the most effective and beneficial to them early on.
Essentially what hance said, good CC abilities and revive.

I nailed the first battle on the first try. Just use your abilities as best as you can, think about where you're positioning your units, always try to face the enemy, and don't be too eager to do damage when you could be better off healing or reviving with your items.

If you want to be a dirty little cheater, there's always save states
All I did was spam sheep count, and never never never leave the fairy with mid-health or it will heal everything and your life will be over, always kill it before it gets a turn

the key to survival in this mod: SPEEDBREAK!
speedbreak is a godsend in this hack and as such you should be glad both marche and ur generic soldier both start with a silver sword (teaches speedbreak) equipped at the start...... also for the first fight, give ur archer the thorn bow for aim: leg to pin the damn dragon down as he hurts liek hell if he gets close, and sheep count is also quite useful as the latter 2 abilities will always hit if the target is either asleep or under the stop status
i got lucky tho on my recent run thru and marche became my one man army for many missions, and was actually my sole survivor at the end of the first as well as many others soon thereafter, finishing the dragon in the first mission off last for some reason and hitting lvl 8 by the mission's end >.>

Hello. I been recently playing this mod. Im not native english speaker so please forgive my mistakes.
I want to share my strategy for the first mission wich was really challening (and painful). I follw some steps that where written here.
First I change Marche into an archer and the other soldier too and gave them 2 Char bow. Then I gave a Thron bow for my viera. Change montblack to animist so he can use Sheep count, and change the bangaa to warrior.
I entered the mission waiting for the fairy to be level 3-4 so ir can be easily defeated. First my viera inmovilze her, later my other 2 archer inflict the blind status to first gnome and dragon. After that I spam Sheep count to the second gnome. Then I inmovilize the dragon. When I defeated the fairy I just resisted the punches, healed and inflict more sleep and blind so it was very hard to hit my units. After everyone was blind finishing the mission was easy.

Thanks for this. Your English is fine.
Unfortunately, I'm not very happy with the first mission's design, in general. CC is good, but the first mission almost forces you to play a certain way in order to beat it (I.e Sheep count and archer status) almost to the point of abuse. On top of that, if you are able to use the CC effectively, it makes the battle almost clockwork.
With the next version I hope to fix a lot of those problems.
Thanks for the comment, I hope this will help a lot of people having trouble.
Everyone having trouble on the first mission should definitely check out Broskadomus's play through on youtube. This should demonstrate the importance of CC.

Well, I think the mission should remain hard enough for teaching the importance of abilities, but not deadly hard has this. Maybe a bit underlevel for the enemies or a take of the heal abilities from the fairy will make the level more fair. This is a design problem, if a lot of player cannot beat this mission they will not enjoy the rest of the game. Personally I have not much free time so when I beat the level I made a save state where I can retake the game from it after the mission when someday I replay the game.

Many people seem to view archer status effects as god tier for the start of the mod. I highly suggest exploring other options if you want to really learn what is really strong starting off in this mod *cough^2* fencer *cough^2*.

The way I beat Herb Picking was by using my White Monk to bait the Fairy to him Speedbreak her and nearest Goblin, put the Dragon to sleep and speed break him. Pray Captain Falcon didn't Falcon Goblin Punch my Soldier to Death, Speedbreak him. Put two of the Goblins to sleep while going to town on the Fairy. Killed Captain Falcon first, followed by the Red Cap, then the weaker Goblin, and finally aim leg the dragon, and lain siege to him like Gwyn from Dark Souls.

IMO the problem with the first fight is that it's just too random, it all depends if your CC abilities can hit, the developer should at least remove angel whisper from the titania, if she uses that shit, you're probably not going to win. Also the enemy movement is ridiculous, the Red Cap has freaking 6 move! It makes too hard to position against them(specially since a lot of classes have less move in this hack), the mobs could at least be a bit more spaced, with the dragon at least starting farther to the players.
I finally could beat it, but only by getting 2 animists(nu mou + montblanc) and spamming sleep everytime one enemy woke up.
