Not to be a pessimist, but I really don't see a FF7 Hardtype being all that great without an overhaul to the materia system.
That said, I'll probably be giving it a go as well.

The materia system is fine. There are a lot of individual materias that are too good/shitty. Nerf the good ones, buff the bad ones.
As the system as a whole stands... It's pretty good.

The system is the problem because it gives you too much freedom, and there's no meaningful drawback whatsoever to loading a character down with materia.

I gives you less HP, and less physical attack. Loading a character up with materia alters their stats. Using vanilla numbers, its a pretty neglible difference, I'll admit. But, that's less to do with the system and more the numbers.

It's both. In a revamp, everything gets looked at. If you're revamping the materia system, you look at everything related to it, including materia.

I guess. Keeping the materia how they are for the most part would be fine. I do agree the numbers and shit have to change.
If you are suggesting something more radical, like changing the amount of materia the average gear at each stage in the game allows, I'll have to disagree, but otherwise, i think we are on the same page.

I'm not comfortable answering that on a whole, but I do think that the materia slots of late game gear should be looked at.

I personally enjoyed the Mod. I thought it was a good difficulty level, hard (compared to vanilla), but certainly not insane
