magic defense or attack defense?
Or should I try and just get both at 240 to be more even?
I have done 2 playthroughs so far other than beating elizabeth so I guess the way I was doing it was the best and I think I always tried for 240 at both spots.
what is better to go for at 255

Considering you can max out both attack and m.attack, that's what I did for every character.
More importantly, all those numbers will be different next time.

To maximize your point usage/gains and make sure no points are wasted, you should get Attack/M. Attack as close to 255 as you can without reaching it until Level 100. If you hit 255 at an earlier level with just the base stat, any further points gained into it via leveling are wasted, and you're actually weaker than you possibly could be. When you hit 100, respec until you find the right mathmatical balance to where no points are wasted. Even if at Level 100 by doing this both stats aren't 255, but fall within the 250's, you're still strong without any waste.

Just want to let you guys know that in the final Version 9, Magic damage is calculated in a WHOLE DIFFERENT way..which is what's taking me so damn long...as I needed to rebalance every thing in the game.
Long story short, this time they'll just as deadly as physical damage. If you make a physical Tank, they'll be weak to magic attack, and if you focus on Magic, they'll be weak to physical attack. You also need to consider the element they are attacking with.
So you'll really need to think about your choices. But that's also why the respec feature is a thing.

I presume you're dealing with the matter of physical damage bumping into the damage limit for the ultimate boss as well?

That issue has long been fixed. DK's referring to a major change in how magic damage is calculated, but much of the damage calculation has been rewritten.
You can expect to see ALL attacks properly capped at 30k damage, for example. No more of those blue-green numbers.
