I finally managed to clear the boss rush and am saved just inside Lavos' shell. The Mammon machine was the real stumbling block (was this the potential Def-challenging enemy you meant?). I was getting tired of beating up queen zeal when I finally managed to break the machine with a lifeline strategy.
The Haste helmet battle prizes are making me nervous. Hopefully they're not critical to victory.

No it is not, I was referring to Lavos' final form. But there could be multiple Def challenges
I certainly made use of haste in my own play, but it's probably not absolutely required.

Eeep.
Oh well, I've made it this far. I wouldn't want the final showdown to be anything less than epic.

About beating the Mammon Machine:
The Haste Helm is hardly necessary. In fact, I found other equips to be far better for boss fights, and I felt that the Haste Helm's only real use was for random encounters.

Success! with Crono (Lv 54), Marle (Lv 51), and Robo (Lv 52). Lavos was not nearly as difficult as I'd feared and, indeed, I managed to scrape by on the first try. Even so, the battle was exciting and there were a few of hairy moments.
@Lockirby2.
Great mod zombero! I think this is a good place for me to stop (Nu Spekkio's out for obvious reasons).
I'd like to send you some bitcoin out of gratitude but don't know if you use it or even if it would be against forum rules. Either way: thank you very much for the mod and for responding to my questions here.

Could you tell me what Zeal's gimmick is? The first time I fought her the Lightning Gate attack was one-shotting my characters and one of her attacks (the name of which escapes me) threw out almost 999 damage.
She really doesn't have a gimmick. If Zeal were getting Mammon Machine's boosts, that would have to be a bug in the original game, which seems unlikely , though not impossible. The Lightning Gate attack is meant to hit pretty hard, though.

The weird thing isn't that it's powerful though...the weird thing is that the first time I went in, she was dealing 1100 damage to Frog/Marle with Lightning Gate, and even though I didn't change my equipment, it began throwing out 800-900 damage instead when I fought her again. That near wipe from the first time was reduced to something like 600 as well.

Just one datum: Zeal was a kitten the one time I fought it. This was following a battle with the Mammon Machine which I'd hit with magic at least 10 times.

Okay, I wasn't sure if that was the specific cause. I really don't know enough about Chrono Trigger to make a good guess here.
