Has anyone thought about what the closest thing to a canon class for each character? Based purely on their story and personality. It may be hard to pick a final class, but their paths arepretty clear based on their prologues.

I'd go with all Light/Dark classes for your main party and Dark/Light for the 3 "benched" ones.
What I read somewhere was that dark classes embrace the spirit of the (dark) present while the light classes adhere to the ideals of the (golden) days in the past.
So the mains strive for a better world (a saved one is a good start) but some traces of the dark present remain (Light -> Light/Dark).
The other three would then start like many other concurrent guys/gals "on the dark side" (out of necessity) but later gain inspiriation from your main team to better themselves, turning from Dark to Dark/Light
Somehow that seems like a better story to me than 6 pure goody two shoes (L/L).

The only ones I see going Dark are Lise and Kevin (they seems pretty set on getting revenge on Navarre/Death Jester), Duran (even though his Light path fits the rest of his story better), and Angela (she supposedly has the most powerful arcane magic in her kingdom). Hawke and Carlie set out entirely on rescue missions.

Duran - Dark / Light. Duran leaves the journey with a rude awakening and wants to kick the crap out of Koren and in a way, restore honor back to his kingdom. Later on, he realizes that things like his father's death were kind of in vain so he goes out to set what was right. He embraces bringing things to how he feels it should be, before the lands were attacked. It's worth noting that Duran isn't exactly a nice guy in the beginning.
Lise - Light / Light - Starts out on the journey to rescue her brother and upon returning to her kingdom she doesn't continue to lead because she accepts that problems are bigger than just hers.
Carlie - Dark / Dark - Starts out to rescue her friend, but sneaks off to do so, abandoning people in the process that might need her outside of Heath. Never stops trudging forward in this way. Even when the world is at stake.
Angela - Light / Dark - Really, is sounds like she's trying to move forward to learn magic simply because "it's right," and she kind of wants to follow in her mother's footsteps. However, I feel that the darkness also would show the fact that she's not willing to hide in her mother's shadow and instead forge her own path of magic (being able to learn spells that even her mother could not).
Kevin - Light / Light - Not embracing his werewolf tendencies seems to be the theme with him, and I remember the light side actually embracing his human side.
Hawk - Light / Dark - Hawk strikes me as the type of guy to initially have a knee-jerk reaction to the assassins and liked being a thief, but realizes that regardless, they DO have some nifty tricks, and he's learned some of them, and plans to pay them back 10-fold. Oh, and save the world.

I always imagined the cannon classes being:
Duran - Sword Master, Duran wanted to be the most powerful fighter in the world when he embarked on his quest and power is really the only thing he craves, so I always thought he'd grow up to be a master in the art of sword play, learning different sword magic to count for every circumstance
Carlie - Sage, since she is half-elf I always imagined that she'd grow up to ultimately being a sage dabbling in both offensive and defensive magic
Lise - Vanadis, she starts off as an Amazoness and I read somewhere that "Vanadis" or "Vanadisu" can translate into War Princess or War Maiden, which I thought is fitting given her story line and Rolante's struggle.
Hawk - Rogue, his story hints at him being more of a Robin Hood type figure, so I always imagined him as a Rogue.
Angela - Magus, she desperately wanted to learn magic and she is the most powerful sorcerer alive, so I thought this was fitting.
Kevin - Warrior Monk, Kevin isn't afraid to use his beastmen heritage to get what he wants, but at the same time I always thought the game portrayed as a pacifist and gentle hearted, based on his human heritage, so I always envisioned him as a Monk

By following these rules.
1. Character's final class is consistent with their first image.
2. Character's class is consistent with its story.
3. Class' abilities is consistent with another member in the main story.
Kevin: God Hand
He started as a pacifist who refuse violence at first but later developed a will to fight so God Hand is the best bet.
Carlie: Sage
She has Sage of Wendal as a mentor and never show interests to dark side. Bishop looks more useful in terms of abilities but it doesn't look well for story-wise.
Duran: Paladin
Classical western protagonist who started being rebellious but matured in late game. His abilities are good too with Saint Saber and healing. Since it shares the popular Star Wars plot so this class fits him best.
Angela: Magus
She started being chased down by her own mother. She suffered a lot and all alone so taking Dark path seems valid in this scenario. I thought Rune Master might fit but Magus looks much better for someone to become stronger than Koren.
Hawk: Night Blade
There's a lot of politics in Hawk's family heritage that I can't see him as a good badass bro. He could be a dark hero so starting with Ninja path is looks legit to me. He can become either Ninja Master or Night Blade in terms of story and abilities but I prefer his Night Blade sprittes.
Lise: Vanadis
Despite her father being killed, brother being abducted, her country is ruined, she always stay positive and never let the darkness win her over through the story. So Vanadis fits her the best as an ideal battle maiden. Though I prefer Star Lancer's abilities better but Vanadis really looks better with her.

huh, when I think "Paladin", I think a (mostly-)selfless person for who most actions are based around "other people", which strikes me as the opposite of Duran.
I mean wasn't Duran's story "about him"?
His need to grow stronger to beat Koren?
His revenge because he was beat?
I don't recall too much motivation of going out to beat Koren "because it is the right thing to do".

Her interest in the dark side has a name: Heath
She flees from her home because of him.
Well, she strikes me too proactive for a Bishop or Sage

In Tales of Abyss, Luke was very selfish and stubborn but later redeemed himself as selfless saint who can sacrifice himself to save others.
Duran's scenario may not seem like he'll be a Paladin himself development with Angela as starting character can suggest him to be one. He challenged his own father who became a darkshine knight so Paladin is a good match for this scene.
You're right that Carlie is tempted to evil following Heath. I completely missed that. But in the end, she managed to save him so being Sage should be fine.

But that doesn't mean that Luke is a paladin however.
Duran's scenario for all intents and purposes has him leave because he wants to go kick some ass. That's why he's my favorite of the main characters in SD3, because he doesn't *need* to leave initially and does so because he wants to. Not because circumstances forced him to.
I can see Sage though. But honestly, I see Dark Shaman for her TBH.
