I've been roaming the castle and desert for an hour and can't find where to go.

Help please

Towards the start of the game? You need to go back to the Throne Room and speak to Serin again, to trigger the next chain of events. Or are you talking about something else? Or if you havn't gone to Serin's room and talked to the old lady (Matrin) then that's the next step,, before going back the the Throne Room.
