Randomizers can be insane

15 posts in this topic

So one of the reasons I haven't been around ID for a while is because of my new involvement with Randomizers. These are interesting variants to like the difficulty hacks that have been created around here. Below is the link to one such case, and is completely insane.

Yeah, the popularity of the original game really helped this take off.  I've dabbled a little, may do more then.

There's actually a google doc that the randomizer community has made that is continuously updated. The list can be found here.

Done several Zelda and LttP playthroughs with randomizers but.. didn't know there were so many games with them. Thank you.. that FF6 Beyond Chaos one looks nuts lol.

Nice, the MMX one is included. That list should include the FFT one that's been uploaded here, which I was gonna say looks insane, and I really want to try out.

Zelda 1 reference information:

http://redcandle.us/Main_Page - This is more a basic Zelda information page that shows insight into the game, including enemy drops, how to screen scroll and block clip, etc.

https://sites.google.com/site/zeldarandomizer/ - The randomizer itself (also has good information on guarantees, etc)

https://www.sites.google.com/site/zeldaanypercents/zelda-1-randomizer - A lot of other good information to help assist in learning the details that help with randomizer (also has the same for other games and randomizers as well)

http://questwizard.net/zhelper - A link to a tracker program for Zelda 1

I've had great fun with the LoZ randomizer in the past. Due to its open ended nature, it's a game that lends itself particularly well to that kind of mod. I hope the dev will add a procedural overworld generator one day.

As for procedural map generation, the Secret of Mana ancient cave does exactly that, which is awesome.

Edit: I just now saw that a new version was released which does seem to procedurally generate dungeon maps. Not sure if the rooms themselves are procedural, but that's cool!

Rooms and overworld are not yet procedural, but Fcoughlin and I have been continuously working towards creating both instances. He currently is doing a lot of additional work towards his MM3 and SMB3 randomizers as well. I know that he is working towards his next big update, which he ideally also wants to include changing which weapons enemies are susceptible to (hello boomerang to kill Ganon).

Glad it took me forever to see that you said something here

I will definitely take a look at that one, maybe try it one night, and forward it to jkoper to update on that list.

EDIT: After seeing Abyssonym created this, I realized it is actually already on that list. It's just down at the bottom (I guess they aren't sorting as they update)

I don't do research first.

I've been watching some Zelda randomizer races recently. My favorite ones are LttP because there's just so much variation. You can see people reeling to try to make decisions as they start to uncover item locations. Trying to make those percentage plays. Very cool.

I've only seen a tiny bit of FFT randomization and it didn't really seem to be as appealing. Shit can just spiral too far into crazy town.
