Take a look at those stats. Just look at them. Let them soak in. Yes, Umaro really has been made that powerful. He's stronger than many characters would be with Esper levels... which is a tiny little point to be made, as Umaro can't get any Esper level-up bonuses. So enjoy these fantastic base stats, as they're as good as Umaro's ever going to get without equipment.
Special Abilities: Rage & Ice Storm
Umaro isn't subtle and can't be controlled by the player, but he is slightly more than a normal Berserk character. Umaro has a chance of either using Fight or tackling the enemy to do more damage. But through two Relics (shared with Gau), Umaro can choose to do up to two more actions on his turn.
If Umaro equips the Rage Belt, he is considered to have a physical booster (and thus does 25% more damage on his Fight and tackle). He will also have a chance of throwing an ally (if one is on hand), which is considerably stronger than his other two attacks, particularly if the throwee is Mog (seriously). An interesting quirk of the throw attack is that the enemy considers the character who was thrown to be the originator of the attack, and will counterattack Umaro's unlucky projectile instead of Umaro himself.
If Umaro equips the Blizzard Orb, he is considered to have a magical booster. What good is it for him to have +25% magical damage? Well, the Blizzard Orb also allows Umaro to use the potent Ice Storm attack on all enemies, which will be boosted by the Blizzard Orb. His Magic is pretty high, and the attack is quite strong, and it happens to be his only multi-target ability.
The Blizzard Orb and Rage Belt also nullify Fire and Bolt damage respectively. If Umaro equips them with his Snow Muffler, he is immune to Fire/Ice/Bolt/Wind damage entirely, which really helps him against some spellcasting foes.
Espers
Umaro cannot equip Espers at all, so he cannot gain any stats from leveling up. Weren't his bases good enough for you?
Spells
Haha, yeah right.
Equipment
Umaro can only use one piece of armor: the Snow Muffler. It brings his already-impressive defenses to truly nasty levels and increases his massive HP pool, as well. It also mixes with the Blizzard Orb and Rage Belt to give him lots of elemental immunities. It lowers his Speed though, so be wary of that.
Umaro can use the same weapons as Gau. The Bone Club will enhance his Fight command, but it doesn't actually have any impact on his tackle or character throw moves, which have a fixed power similar to Bushido or Blitz. The Magic Bone will make his Fight weaker, but it will somewhat boost his Ice Storm attack. In general, use the Magic Bone if using the Blizzard Orb and the Bone Club if not.
Umaro likes his unique Relics, but he can use anything really. The Black Belt can be nice for boosting his Speed and allowing him to counterattack, and Sprint Shoes also keep him attacking fast. Protective relics can also be handy against bosses capable of cutting through his high defenses.
Availability
Umaro is a hidden character and is not available in the World of Balance at all. He can be found in the World of Ruin in Narshe in a hidden cave that is accessible after the Tritoch boss is defeated. Inside the cave, Umaro will have to be subdued as the Yeti boss before he can be recruited, and you'll still need to bring Mog to get Umaro to move to the airship. Nothing's really stopping you from getting Mog early or going to Narshe as soon as you can, but it still takes two boss fights before Umaro is recruitable. At least you get two nice Espers out of it, as defeating Umaro will grant the Terrato Esper in addition to the Tritoch Esper you picked up on the way in.
